Bezerk BLOG - (aka adventures of Paul Sims)
29th Sep...continued...the pics I promised. A huge thanks to my wife and kids for my birthday/Father's day present, a camera that works!!! Some sweet bling, note the hidden spoke nipples, disc brake only rim, 25mm depth... 29th Sep...I started a new program on the magtrainer on Monday with a different intensity/duration, was good to have engine revving a little more...should be good for the next few weeks until the Dirtcrits start in the middle of October. Yes that's right, Paul at Pinnacle is saying the Knobbysports events is starting up on the 15th with an extra Saturday morning event being added too, so possibly a chance for riders who can't make it to the Wed nite laps of pain... Wednesday was a chance to catch up with long time pal Jay, who just got back from 3yrs living the dream in Colorado and what better way than thrashing round Lysterfield for a couple of hours! Mello got me in some carbon rims to build up the first pair of Bouwmeester offroad wheelset, so I got busy and built up at least a rear wheel (maybe some pics by end of today...) which I gave a quick thrashing to on Firday arvo. Seems very stiff and has a more friendly outer lip to possibly minimise pinch flats, hopefully won't have to test that theory too often!!! Sunday was another 200+ km off-road from Bulleen Rd...a big thanks to Chris for daring to do the midnite to 4:00 shift, we even left early! We managed a steady pace for the four hours and kept it clean, well except for the boggy hole on stage 2...ha ha. I think Chris enjoyed himself, especially being his first time around! Another thanks goes to Paul N for pushing me a little harder around 10:00 onward, we managed to push my average speed up to 19.5 by the end, so some good work all round. Must say I found a new level on Sunday, where usually you start strong and maybe feel like you've lost your edge by the end, this time I felt like I'd just started the ride by the 10hr+ mark, so this keeps me optomistic for the 24hr ahead... More magtrainer tonite as well as start on custom frame from Columbus Life/Zona, should be a fun build up. 14hrs next Sunday, just need to decide whether to go on or off-road... 21st Sep...A busy week at Greenspeed getting more last minute things ready for Interbike, now half the staff have left for IB leaving the rest of us to fend for our selves. Wednesday night saw Baz and I cutting some laps at Lyster, the cold rolled in real quick so we cut it short with just the two laps. The tracks have faired pretty well over the winter showing widened sections in only a few places. Still loving the new Bezerk frame, seems to fit better than ever and has a very neutral feel. I eventually got Baz's frame re-painted after my first attempt was a little short of what I'd hoped for, much happier now and will post some pics in the products section when I have time. Received my first custom order on Friday for a full build up, looking forward to getting it up and running. Saturday I finally had the chance to pick up some Hammer Nutrition Perpetuem from Gran Prix Cycles to try out before the big day. Sunday's schedule was 6hrs of hills, yeah! a weekend away from the longer flat rides! I met up with Sam at the base of the 1/20 with Chris turning up not much later as we were ascending (he had taken off earlier in morn and had already been up Devil's). The 1/20 is a good warm up esp when you keep the heartrate down and take your time. I don't remember the whole morning of climbs, but it included the 1/20 x 2, Ridge Rd, Perrin's Creek, the Full Monty, the Wall, up to Belgrave and on to Sherbrooke, One Tree Hill...so the end tally for myself - 123km I mixed up 4hrs worth of HNP for the ride and only added my usual sesame bar to the input, worked out great and suffered no flat spots this time, looking promising so far...but what's with the flavour! Orange and vanilla just doesn't sound right...sort of like fanta in a milkshake! Wasn't that bad though, was a bit thick to squeeze out of the bottle when that concentrated, but tasted quite acceptable...now to test next week on the 12hr run... Some new magtrainer sessions tomorrow night, should be interesting...ha ha ha! 15th Sep...After last Sunday's ride I came down with the dreaded cold, so a week of rest was in order...so no steep hill climbs, no magtrainer of pain or even a spin around the block, just a good rest. Seems to have worked, cold is much better now! So on to Sunday's ride. 12hrs of flat was on the schedule so I decided to mix it up a bit and do the deed on the MTB instead. So the ute got packed with supplies and I set off to Bulleen rd to park and set up base camp for the next 12hrs. Official take off time was 23:59.10 according to the ever accurate Garmin, just made it in time even though I had to make a quick u-turn on the way there to go back and get my helmet! I tried using the yellow lenses on my PBK glasses to trial them in the dark stuff, very interesting. The superb spread of the TriNewt light was made a little warmer which made for a better contrast to the trail, as an added bonus, any bright light you came across was actually dulled quite considerably...weird but good stuff! So the Westerfolds run is interesting when riding at this time on a Sunday morning, especially when riding past a footy club full of Saturday night pissheads every hour and a half, from cheering patrons to people lying passed out on the path! The trails were great, a few surprises since my last visit with some fallen trees and some deep ruts from their constant use throughout the winter. Still great to see it is true singletrack though, not a freeway as a lot of Lyster has become... Thanks to Baz I had some company from 4:00 until 7:00, this enabled me to turm of the tunes for a few hours (you get some good radio tunes with no ads at this time of the morning!) and carve it up with a friend. Actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would...as the lap was around 1-1/2hrs long it meant you didn't have too many to do, you food breaks were pretty well timed and you just made it back with an empty bottle. As I didn't think the Garmin would go 12hrs, I decided to aim for a distance target instead and ended up finishing up a bit after 11:00...so end tally was yet another PB, PB for SS MTB riding distance for me anyway - No hitting the wall this time and had much more to eat this time around, still some experiementing to do if I'm going to last for 24hrs... 7th Sep...A picture tells a thousands words etc, good thing as I'm too knackered to type...ha ha ha
